about

Boo says:
I first met Rebecca in Manhattan’s East Village where she lived at the time. These songs here were staples of her live set that we would duo with our Martin guitars at joints in the neighborhood, tunes that stayed with you well after you heard them. The positive response from listeners to Rebecca’s vocals and songwriting moved us to commit a few to tape and this is what we managed to capture. Thanks for listening, enjoy.

Rebecca says:
I had started gigging as a singer-songwriter, and had done some shows accompanied by the amazing Boo Reiners. We started making a demo of my songs together, in Boo’s cool Weehawken apartment that was part of an old house. New Jersey seemed so exotic to this city girl then! Boo played and engineered everything, and sang wonderful backups. One night I was at a Loser's Lounge at Fez in the East Village, handing out flyers for an upcoming gig I was doing. They said "Rebecca Turner with Boo Reiners." I gave one to a cute guy at a back table, and he exclaimed, “Hey, Boo is one of my best friends!” The guy said his name was Scott Anthony, and we shook hands. When our demo was finally done, Boo said, “We should get my buddy Scott Anthony to master it.” (In my head: “The cute guy from Fez!”) “Sure,” I said. Boo drove us even further out into NJ, stopping at Boston Market on the way. I met Scott’s cat Abbey, and a sweet 3.5 year old human in blue footies. Thus this demo, and a big chunk of my future, was born.

Scott says:
Sometime around ‘97 or ‘98, Boo asked to use my ADAT digital recorder, a little Mackie mixer, and a Shure SM57 microphone. He had just started working with a songwriter, and they wished to record a few demos in his house.

This process went on for quite a while...Boo trying different ways to get the sounds he wanted out of my minimal recording rig. When I’d stop by to visit Boo (for pancakes, shop talk, etc.) we would always end up in front of the speakers, hearing the progress of the songs and his recording techniques.

I think this went on for at least a year, maybe 2 or more? I’d hear rough mixes and still not meet Rebecca. One day Boo announced they had finished and would love to have the tunes mastered.

I was set up in a little ranch house in Chatham Twp, NJ. They arrived one weeknight in March, 2000 around 7 p.m. On that eve we finished this EP, but Rebecca also met her future stepson Henry, then only 3 1/2 years old. (Bec and I had finally met a couple of months earlier, at Fez.)

Anyway, I think it still sounds fantastic, and I still wonder what kind of albums Boo and Rebecca might have made if I hadn’t decided to ask her on a date a few months later...and fell in love.
