about

Songwriting-wise, the pandemic wasn’t super-fruitful for me. (We did do other things, like make a nutty YouTube variety show called Omniana, but I digress!) At the beginning I did know a few things, though. Whatever I did next musically was gonna be different from whatever I did before. I also knew I wanted to record some of my favorite non-rock songs, specifically some stuff from my mom's era. And weirdly what started to come out were these quirky little new songs that (I at least) thought sounded old. And strangely, also, they were about either my far past, or other people and their pasts, or...nothing in particular. "Lazy To Be Lucky" is one of 'em. The rest and a bunch of other stuff will end up on a forthcoming album, tentatively titled "Abbey's Plant."*

And we were so lucky (and I guess, not lazy) to be able to record this to vinyl at Earnest Tube, in Bristol, VA, with Clint Holley and Dave Polster at the helm. Briana Morris Fillers was taking photos for the tourism folks that day so we got some nice pix.

*In our last house there was a little plant growing through a cement crack by the furnace. It lived for years, and had a scraggly, pale beauty. Our late cat Abbey used to like to warm herself right next to the furnace and plant, so we called it Abbey's Plant. She too had a scraggly, pale beauty. And a lot of pandemic "art" did/does too, I think.
